Studying the Lewis and Clark Collection

The "Lewis and Clark collection" at the Peabody Museum includes what are believed to be the only remaining Native American objects acquired by the Lewis and Clark expedition. They were originally given by President Jefferson and by Lewis and Clark to the Peale Museum in Philadelphia. The Boston Museum acquired a portion of the Peale collection about 1850, and transferred the materials to the Peabody Museum in 1899. For more on the history of the collection, see "The Ethnography of Lewis and Clark." A book on the collection, titled Arts of Diplomacy: Lewis and Clark's Indian Collection, will be published jointly by the Peabody and by the University of Washington Press in November, 2003.

The surviving objects represent encounters between the Corps of Discovery and native peoples along the Missouri and Columbia Rivers. Documentary evidence linking the objects to the expedition is uneven. Some of the objects can be traced directly to Lewis and Clark, while others cannot be definitively associated with the expedition. Consequently, the collection has been organized into categories based on the strength of their association with the Corps of Discovery.

The following list presents our current understanding of the collection. Please direct all inquiries, including permission to reproduce images of the objects, to pmresrch@fas.harvard.edu.

Objects Collected by Lt. George C. Hutter
Documentation confirms that these objects were donated to the Peale Museum by the family of Lt. George Christianson Hutter in 1828. Lt. Hutter was married to William Clark's niece and was stationed in St. Louis. While some scholars have suggested that he obtained these objects from Clark or from Jefferson, he probably acquired at least some of them on the Atkinson-O'Fallon military expedition of 1825-1826.

Objects Possibly Collected by Lewis and Clark or Hutter
These objects lack the documentary evidence necessary to link them definitively to the expedition, but they match descriptions of things given by Lewis and Clark to Peale, and are potentially old enough to have been collected in the early nineteenth century. Some of them were almost certainly acquired by Lewis and Clark.
