HOLDINGS FROM EUROPE
The
Peabody’s European collections are not extensive, but include many
materials not generally available in American museums. Among these holdings
are: the Duchess of Mecklenburg collection of Iron Age artifacts from
Slovenia; a portion of the Gabriel de Mortillet collections from Central
Europe; the Dana Estes collection of Iron Age artifacts from northern
Italy; artifacts from the excavations at Neolithic Homolka and other sites
in Bohemia; extensive Paleolithic collections from France, especially
the Abri Pataud; one of the "Venus" figurines from Grimaldi Cave (Italy);
Neolithic stone tools from northwestern Europe; pottery collections from
Cyprus and Iberia.
