The series comprises mostly correspondence
between Day and individuals whom she invited to participate as
subjects in her study. Included are solicitations, acceptances, and
refusals; discussion of the project's goals and methodologies,
including its conceptual basis, sampling techniques, field work, use
of statistics, organization and interpretation of data, and issues of
privacy and confidentiality; outline of Day's relationship with
Earnest A. Hooton, her academic career at Harvard University and
affiliation with the Peabody Museum; and notes, summaries,
amendments, and analysis of genealogy, race mixture, and other
factors pertinent to individuals and families involved in the study.
There are allusions to the intellectual context of Day's work--its
relationship, for example, to the research of other intellectuals
such as Hooton, Charles B. Davenport, Carleton Coon, Melville J.
Herskovits, and J.H. Johnston (a black scholar interested in familial
and other ties between Blacks and Native Americans). The
correspondence between Day and Hooton discusses research methodology,
documentation, manuscript revisions, and significance of the study.
There are letters from W.E.B. DuBois concerning his family's origins.
Because many of the correspondents were relatives or friends of Day,
some letters cover family, business, social, literary, political,
health, educational, and other matters extraneous or only marginally
relevant to the study.
In addition to providing information on correspondents and their
families, letters often refer to other individuals and families whose
correspondence with CBD does not exist in this collection. Some of
those mentioned were participants in the study, others were not.
Among those mentioned are Georgia Bell, John (Jack) Bond, Eva Bowles,
Juliet Bradford, Albert Brooks, Henry Brown, Nellie Brown, Matthew
Bullock, Edith Bythewood, George Washington Carver, Yolande DuBois,
Harriet Evans, Lillian Evanti, Marie Graves, Maud Cuney Hare, Herbert
King, Wenonah Bond Logan, Judson Lyons, Josie Murphy, Sadie Nutter,
E.P. Roberts, W.A. Robinson, Ada Hill Smith, Annie Styles, Beatrice
Taylor, Grace Towns, Charles Westmoreland, and Charles Young.
Arranged alphabetically by correspondent, thereunder chronologically.
Partially identified and unidentified correspondence is filed at the
end of the series.

[+Unidentified & partial list of correspondents]
Anthropometry forms contain physiological
data for 507 individuals, many of whom appear nowhere else in the
Papers. Some correspondents were unwilling to contribute genealogical
or sociological information.
Each 8 1/2" x 5" form contains measurements of an individual
subject--including bodily and facial dimensions, hair texture and
skin color; and biographical information including occupation and
nationality. Many of the individuals described on the forms were
Atlanta University (AU) students or Atlanta residents. Presumably,
CBD's choice of subjects resulted from her ties to the AU community
as an alumna and teacher from 1926 to 1929. Day used printed forms,
which were labeled "Peabody Museum of Harvard University."
Photographs (3 1/4"x4") attached to about 200 of the anthropometry
forms depict the individuals described. These photos were taken by
CBD or an assistant.
The names below are found on the forms. Each name includes all or
some of the following information: surname, given name(s) and maiden
name, title, married name, and alternative spellings.
Arranged alphabetically. (Many of the forms were originally organized
by racial percentage. They are now interfiled alphabetically.) Number

Organized according to the following
subseries:
A) Genealogical/morphological data, ca. 1918-ca. 1929
B) Racial heredity/sociological data, ca. 1919-ca. 1929
C) Physiological data (Bureau of International Research,
Harvard/Radcliffe), 1927-28
D) Anthropometry forms (Division of Anthropology, Harvard
University)
E) Genealogical/sociological data (Bureau of International
Research)
F) Samples, incomplete forms
G) Tables
H) Guides
Whereas the anthropometry forms contain data
for approximately 500 individuals, the 69 questionnaires represent
only a fraction of the individuals interviewed by Day. The
questionnaires contain genealogical information such as birthplace
and parentage, and physiological and sociological information similar
to data that was compiled in the tables. Day used printed forms from
the BIR Harvard/Radcliffe and the Division of Anthropology at Harvard
to collect the data.
The names below are found on the questionnaires. Each name includes
all or some of the following information: surname, given name(s),
maiden name, title, married name(s), and alternative
spellings.

Folders containing tables and guides follow the questionnaires. Both questionnaires and anthropometry forms were used to compile the tables. The statistical analyses of the tables were most likely done by Richard Post and Carl Seltzer, who were students of E.A. Hooton. Also included in this series are guides for taking physiological measurements.

Fifty-nine "family histories" are narratives
which describe the "racial characteristics" of families. These
families were described according to such categories as:
dominant/recessive, facial features, skin color (designated by
number), and hair form (graded by letter and number). CBD compiled
"family histories" to accompany the genealogical charts appearing in
her 1932 publication.
The names below are found in the histories. Preceding the histories
is a folder of instructions for typing and arranging family
histories.
Arranged alphabetically, according to family name.
