INVENTORY OF
THE PAPERS OF CAROLINE BOND DAY

  PHOTOGRAPHS

(approximately 3,500 in 6 boxes)

There are 2,034 negatives (including 260 glass plate negatives) and approximately 1500 prints which correspond to the genealogical charts, and are arranged in the same alpha-numeric scheme. Most are copy negatives, which CBD made by rephotographing family photos. Many of the prints are duplicates. The images are identified by family name.

Of special note are 40 portraits given to Day by the families of L. Sloane Blocker, Jr., Matt Bullock, Annie Edwina Clarke, Clifton Hagwood, Kate Hamilton, Nathaniel Harrison, Adrienne Henderson, Mrs. Henderson, Leslie De Janette, Euphasia Smith Kyle, A. Elmo Reynolds, Mrs. Edwin Smith, Edwina Smith, Booker T. Washington, Mrs. Hattie Cash Williams, Lucien Williams, the Williston family, Samuel Wynn, among other participants in her study.

The images range in format from cartes de visite to cabinet cardsome also include brief biographical notes. The studios include: A.W. Dozier (Atlanta, Ga.), Adams (401/2 Whitehall Street, Atlanta, Ga.), Will Armstrong (Boston, Ma.), Mead (861/2 Whitehall Street, Atlanta, Ga.), Albert Sandoz (Mobile, Al.), M.M. & W.H. Gardner (13 Marrietta Street, Atlanta, Ga.), Augusta Photo Company (702 Broad Street, Augusta Ga.), J.W. Blyth (10 Court Square, Montgomery, Al.), and Capital Copying House (501/2 South Broad Street, Atlanta, Ga.).

Please contact Photographic Archives for access to these images and negatives. Please also see the Photographic Resources Guide to the North American Collections.

Arranged by chart, thereunder by family name.

Box 27 a, b, c Contents

Glass plate negatives of individuals which are identified and correspond to alpha-numeric list. The three boxes contain images A3-F229, as well as unidentified glass plate negatives of individuals.

Box 28 a, b, c Contents

Nitrate negatives of identified individuals which correspond to the alpha-numeric list. They contain images A1 - F22.

Box 29 a, b Contents

Nitrate negatives that are unidentified images. The nitrate negatives in these boxes are of special interest because among them are the only original views of people and their houses and surroundings which Day took (the indexed negatives and prints are all Day's copies of family photographs). There are several hundred informal portraits here, taken for anthropometric analysis, showing individuals both full face and in profile. There are informal family portraits, many of which include parts of home exteriors, as well as images solely of houses. These demonstrate Day's keen interest in the sociology of the families she studied. The negatives are loosely categorized by type of view and none are labeled according to family groups. Although some views are included on the family charts, there are almost certainly unprinted views as well.

Box 30 a, b Contents

Black and white prints. Box 30a contains prints which correspond to the individuals A1-F22. Box 30b contains prints of individuals which are identified.

Box 31 a, b Contents

Box 31a contains the copy negatives of the genealogical charts; organized and identified by families. Box 31b contains the corresponding prints to these copy negatives.

Box 32 Contents

Houses the Caroline Bond Day publication, A Study of Some Negro-White Families in the United States.

In Day's research, gradations of hair form were used as racial markers. Descriptives such as texture, color, and levels of straightness and curliness were applied. The following names were found on envelopes containing hair samples, which were never affixed to the charts.
