HOLDINGS FROM CENTRAL & SOUTH AMERICA

Central America

The Peabody has a small collection of ethnographic artifacts from Central America, including the Alice Melvin collection of modern Mexican folk art, textiles from Guatemala collected by G.B. Gordon, carved and painted fiesta masks from Mexico, an extensive collection of molas, and woven garments from Honduras.

South America

The South American collections at the Peabody include some of the earliest accessions of the Museum, including artifacts collected by Louis and Alexander Agassiz in the 1870s and 1880s. Among these holdings are an extensive collection of featherwork headresses and ornaments (19th and 20th century) from the Amazon Basin and the William Farabee collection of ceremonial and domestic objects from Peru and Bolivia.
