DONATING TO THE MUSEUM

The Registration Department processes all acquisitions. To facilitate the review procedure, potential donors are asked to supply the Registrar with a description and photograph of their object or collection. Information about the object's or collection's history, including date and circumstances of collection, is particularly appreciated. All potential acquisitions are reviewed by the museum staff. The final decision to accept new acquisitions resides with the Director.

After a potential acquisition has been approved, the donor will be asked to sign a Deed of Gift formally transferring ownership of the object or collection to the Peabody Museum. Donors of archival collections will also be requested to complete a questionnaire to insure that everyone--the donor, Peabody Museum staff, and researchers--understands the terms and conditions of use for the gift.

The Peabody Museum cannot offer appraisals of donated collections. If a donor wishes to have a gift appraised, the responsibility for the appraisal, including the cost, lies completely with the donor.

In compliance with Harvard University's Bond Committee Report, the Peabody Museum will not acquire any materials known or suspected to have been exported from their country of origin after July 1, 1971 in contradiction to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
