Magdalena de Cao Viejo

These web pages present information on archaeological, historical, and other research on an early Spanish Colonial town and church at the El Brujo Archaeological complex on the north coast of Peru. This work is being carried out by a research team of American and Peruvian archaeologists and other professionals.

This web site presents background information on the archaeological site of Magdalena de Cao Viejo, discussion of research carried out to date, preliminary and developing interpretations of discoveries, and plans for future studies. Because our research is ongoing and exploring areas of the past not studied in great detail before, we welcome comments and suggestions from visitors to these pages.

Special thanks are offered to the Fundación Wiese of Lima, Peru for generously supporting the United States' contingent of the research team as well as as its long-term support of archaeology by the Peruvian team. Thanks also to the Instituto Nacional de Cultura del Perú, both Lima and Trujillo offices, and to its personnel, for interest and support of our efforts. Research at the site is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Peabody Museum of Harvard University. Prior support was provided by the National Geographic Society and Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collections. They are greatly thanked for their support.
