Of the Peabody Museum’s nearly 3,000 Awatovi photographs, about half are of the excavation; the rest are of camp society. Life “in the field” can be intense, and expedition participants were forever bound by shared experiences. Their most durable recollections are often celebratory: visits to Hopi First and Second Mesas to watch ceremonial dances; Halloween; Thanksgiving; birthday parties; and the social event of the 1939 field season, the marriage of J. O. Brew and Evelyn Nimmo.
