In addition to developing anthropometric apparatus, Sargent designed numerous pieces of exercise equipment that could strengthen all major muscle groups and overcome a range of physical deficiencies. Amid fears that white men were becoming weak and overcivilized, with many no longer earning their livelihood from physical labor like previous generations of men, Sargent’s program seemed to offer scientific solutions to the dangers of modern life.
